A large steel trader in Dubai known as Age Steel approached Exponent last year, a logistics solutions company, to ease the process of finding and moving tons of steel in their 10,000 square meter yard. This is when Asam Khan, COO of Exponent thought it might be a neat idea to put RFID readers on drones and fly them above the yard to track them.
The problem isn’t in moving the steel, it’s in finding it when it’s needed, knowing where it is available accurately is a challenge for most steel traders, especially when the yard is that particularly huge.
Exponent looked into using a simple RFID system (Radio Frequency Identification), which would tag the bundles as they came in, and set up antennas all over the yard to triangulate and find the exact location of every piece. This method proved ineffective as metal distorts the signal, making it improbable for any accurate estimation of a piece’s whereabouts.
